Creating a ‘Mohr’ room in LA, We have a new poker club at another local senior center, the Freda Mohr Senior Multipurpose Center on Fairfax Ave., Los Angeles.
In many ways it is very similar to the Seniors Poker Group near Claude Pepper’s Senior Center which hosted the Omaha table as well as the two Texas hold’em limit games; but the new ones are much smaller – so far – with only one hold’em game; and the players have a lot less experience.
We play limit Texas hold’em to prizes donated by local casinos and friends. Since its inception a few months ago, the group has grown to visit KingPoker99 steadily as other seniors in the area learn about it. We are almost at full capacity, but have plans for growth to accommodate other seniors in our community.
Most of our members are new to the game. Some have watched it on TV; that interests them, and they want to learn more. For the first six weeks, we were fortunate to have George “The Engineer” Epstein (my poker co-columnist and mentor) on hand to teach us the game and share poker strategy and tactics during the first hour of each session.
I advise other senior centers around the country to start a similar recreational poker club or group so that their seniors can also enjoy the mental challenges and social interactions. “As for playing the middle pocket pair, it depends on each situation, and can be very tricky,” I commented. “We have to discuss it another time.” At that moment, several others had arrived. “Let’s get started,” said Jeff. And we do – with pleasure.
